Water to Help Weight Loss

We need water for every metabolic process in the body. We need water to help weight loss. Water assists our bodies to digest and absorb nutrients, carry away waste and help flush fat and toxins through the liver and kidneys. Sometimes people think they are hungry or tired when they are actually thirsty. Drinking water as a first step rather than reaching for food is another way you can use water for weight loss.

We lose about 1.5 litres a day in urinating, breathing and sweating. We need to drink about 8 glasses of fluid a day to replace the lost fluid but optimal health requires you to have more water in the system, not just enough to replace the water we excrete normally. This is easily done by increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat. Cucumbers have over 95% water content and salad greens, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes and cabbage have over 90% water. Of the fruits, watermelon, melons, papaya, grapefruit, cranberries, peaches, oranges, apricots and blackberries all have over 85% water. The bonus it that while eating these delicious fruit and vegetables, you gain the important phyto-chemicals and micro-nutrients which are contained in fruit and vegetables.

What harm is caused by dehydration?

Most people think that dehydration does not concern them, that it is something which happens to bushwalkers and hikers who run out of water. But many of us are chronically dehydrated because we dont drink enough water. These are some problems which chronic dehydration may cause.

Fatigue and loss of energy as the bodys enzyme activity slows down. (Sometimes tired people eat in an effort to pep up energy.)

Constipation

Problems with digestion such as gas, indigestion and loss of appetite Additional cholesterol. (If too much fluid leaves cells due to dehydration, the body may try to prevent this loss through making more cholesterol.) Cystitis and urinary infections (due to toxins in urine being insufficiently diluted). Overweight and obesity (by people eating in response to hunger which is actually thirst.

Even a little dehydration can cause you to feel anxious and nervous. Must I drink water for weight loss? Are other beverages helpful?

Water

Drinking water is the best way to hydrate the body. Drink water for weight loss. If you dont like the taste of tap water either use a filter or put in it a jug in the fridge for half an hour before drinking to allow the chlorine to evaporate away. If you find he taste of water to be too bland, squeeze a little lemon into it. ( Drinking two litres or 8 glasses of water are day is fine but dont drink to excess. In 2008 Jennifer Strange of California died in a competition to drink as much water as she could. She drank six litres of water in three hours, developed water intoxication and died. )

Fruit and vegetable juices

Fruit and vegetable juices can also be drunk and counted toward the recommended 8 glasses of water a day but they should be diluted with water. Unless using juices for therapeutic reasons, weight watchers should eat the whole fruit and vegetables instead as they contain fewer calories, more fiber and are more filling that way. It is easy to take in too many calories by drinking fruit juice so drink no more than a glass a day. Make sure you count the calories.

Milk

Milk has many nutrients including calcium but it also contains calories. Drink skim milk or low fat milk.. Keep track of the calories you take in.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and green tea both have elements which are beneficial to weight loss but because the body needs to eliminate them in particular ways, they should not be counted toward the 8 recommended glasses of water. Weight watchers can however, continue to drink coffee and tea if you enjoy them. Remember to count the calories in any milk or sugar you add.

Commercial soft drinks

Soft drinks are made up of water, refined white sugar or artificial sweetener, acids, colouring agents. Soft drinks with a cola base contain caffeine from the cola nut. Commercial soft drinks are not good at hydrating because the body has to work harder to process them. Often people who drink soft drinks feel thirsty soon afterwards. Soft drinks are not recommended for weight loss. If you drink them, they cant be counted toward the 8 glasses of recommended water.
